Impact Amplified organised an outdoor event focused on ‘Reconnecting Business to Nature,’ utilising the Three Horizons framework as our guiding structure.

Summary of Use:

We recently organised an outdoor event focused on ‘Reconnecting Business to Nature,’ utilising the Three Horizons framework as our guiding structure.

The aim was to help business leaders become resilient in these fast-changing times. We facilitated a deeper understanding of current business practices, exploring our dependence on nature; this helped business leaders understand the need to shift away from extractive practices and collectively brainstorm more harmonious approaches.

One of the strengths of using Three Horizons was its flexibility as a ‘container’ for peer-to-peer dialogues, allowing us to effortlessly incorporate other methodologies. For example, the 9 Planetary Boundaries framework was smoothly integrated into our discussions to delve into specific environmental concerns.

The event took place outdoors, a setting that proved to enhance the relevance and engagement of our discussions. Even without the usual 3H map for visual guidance, the Three Horizons framework remained intuitive and effective, a testament to its adaptability

Use Experience:

Reconnecting business to nature is a nebulous topic and one that we wanted to explore in only half a day!

Three Horizons was a useful way to structure the session. We found that even without the usual visual assets such as the map and trusty sticky notes we were still able to utilise the Three Horizons effectively.

For example, to explore Horizon 1 we engaged in a 9 Planetary Boundaries exercise to explore the interconnectedness and dependencies on nature. And for Horizon 3 we discussed the future in pairs as we walked through a rewilding site.

Feedback from the session:

“An inspirational session…thank you. It might not sound like a good thing, but I couldn’t get to sleep till around 3am that night due to the amount of thoughts I just couldn’t turn off. Food for thought doesn’t do it justice”

“It’s not uncommon to feel anger, frustration and overwhelm when working in this space but coming together with other like minded people, passionate about making a positive difference in the world turns that despair into a feeling of hope, empowerment and agency – and collaboration is key!”

“We were all brimming with optimism for the collaborative solutions we could all be working on to make our businesses, communities and industries more sustainable”

“Thanks for having us! It was such a great event and it really opened my eyes to the way I/we approach what we do and those in our supply chain.”

What do we mean by sustainability?

We need to achieve a sustainable balance of meeting the needs of both people and planet and not focusing on one to the detriment of the other – harmonising people, planet and prosperity.

When considering business sustainability we look at how the firm (positively or negatively) impacts our Earth system and society (inside-out), and how our Earth system and society may (positively or negatively) impact a firm’s ability to achieve its objectives (outside-in).
